Tips to Extend the Life Expectancy of your Air Conditioner

July 12, 2020

Every summer when the temperature outside rises, you flip the switch on your thermostat from “heat” to “cool.” Lo and behold, your air conditioner faithfully responds by producing cool and comfortable air. Eventually, though, these years of operation in Louisville will take their toll, leading to a necessary replacement by Legacy Heating & Air Conditioning. Given the discomfort you’ll experience while you wait for a new unit and considering the cost of replacement, it makes sense to squeeze as much life as you can out of your current unit. Here are a few tips to help you do just that.

Yearly Maintenance Is a Must

If you follow nothing else in this article, be sure to remember this: annual maintenance is crucial to extending the life of your system. Problems can develop in just a single year that can be caught by the professionals at Legacy Heating & Air Conditioning before they spiral out of control. If you wait two or more years, though, your system may be so far gone by the time help arrives that your system can’t be saved. In addition to looking for problems, the technician will properly clean, lubricate, and adjust your system to ensure it operates efficiently.

Provide Some Breathing Room

Your compressor, the unit that sits outside, is a crucial component of cooling the air inside your home. The compressor helps the refrigerant expel its heat into the air so that it can begin the cooling process that finishes in the condenser coil in your indoor unit. To properly expel heat, the compressor must be kept free of debris at all times. The grate at the top of the unit where the air from the fan escapes is especially crucial to keep clean, as any blockages here could cause the unit to overheat.

Keep Your Ducts Clean

Dirty ducts can cause a variety of problems in your home. One problem dirty ducts can cause is restricted airflow coming from your air conditioner. This extra resistance could put an extra load on your air conditioner and blower motor, leading to premature failure. Additionally, since there will be less cool air coming through the dirty ducts, your house won’t cool down as quickly. This may cause your system to run for longer than it would otherwise, again leading to premature failure of your system. Having your ducts cleaned is a fairly quick and inexpensive process that we at Legacy Heating & Air Conditioning highly recommend.

Don’t Forget Your Air Filter

Sometimes, keeping your air conditioner working properly is as simple as changing the air filter. Unlike dirty ducts, which restrict outbound airflow from the air conditioner, a dirty air filter will restrict the airflow going to the air conditioner, which can cause it to overheat or simply work too hard. A clean filter, though, will give your air conditioner plenty of air and help protect its most sensitive components to keep it working well for years to come. Generally, you should change your air filter about once a month. However, it doesn’t hurt to check your filter every couple of weeks to ensure it hasn’t suddenly become caked with dust.

Don’t Run It If You Don’t Have To

Another simple way to help your air conditioner last longer is to only run it when it’s absolutely necessary. By installing ceiling fans and a programmable thermostat, you can greatly reduce the demand on your air conditioner, leading to less wear and tear on its components. Ceiling fans help by lowering the “felt temperature” in the room you’re occupying, meaning you can set the temperature on the thermostat higher. Programmable thermostats are nice to have because they ensure your system isn’t running when you’re not home.
