Jeffersonville, KY History
Situated in Clark County, Indiana, Jeffersonville is a city that lies along the Ohio River to the north of the city of Louisville, Kentucky. With an estimated population of more than 45,000 residents, it’s commonly referred by its abbreviated name ‘Jeff’. The city is the county seat of its county and is known for its riverfront, local restaurants, and museums.
In 1786, a settlement grew around Fort Finney, which was located where the present-day Kennedy Bridge is. The fort was abandoned in 1793, and while it is unclear when the settlement came to be known as Jeffersonville, it’s believed to be around 1801, when Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. President, took office.
A post office was established in Jeffersonville in 1803. By 1808, the State’s second office for federal land sale was set up in the city, bringing an influx of new residents to Indiana. Since Jeffersonville was one of the main gateways to the South, the importance of the city was signified with the American Civil War as it was made one of Union Army’s principal bases for troops and supplies.
Jeffersonville’s recovery from the Flood of 1937 and the Great Depression had much to do with the popularity of gambling during the 1930s and 1940s. In 2008, the city officially annexed four planned annex zones – out of six – and this increased the population by about 4,500 citizens and added around 5,500 acres to the city.
As of today, Jeffersonville is not only one of three ports throughout Indiana, but also one of the fastest growing cities in the region. The city’s history of shipbuilding can be learned at the Howard Steamboat Museum. For recreation, residents head to Deam Lake – for fishing, hiking, boating, camping and swimming – and Charlestown State Park – for camping and hiking trails at the old ammunition plant.
In addition, to have a wide variety of local restaurants, there are also many places to go for alcohol in the city. For golf lovers, there are a number of great options to choose from, including Twilight Golf Course, Hidden Creek Golf Club as well as Covered Bridge Golf Club, all of which offer exceptional facilities and spectacular views.
The city of Jeffersonville receives 46 inches of rainfall and 6 inches of snowfall per year. With the average high around 87 degrees in the summers, it’s important to have a reliable air conditioning system in place to lower the temperature in your home. Furthermore, since the mercury drops as low as 27 degrees in the winters, you should invest in a heat pump to make it through the season.
